Changes. The music industry, technology, songwriting, genres... Changes...

Everything has changed in our music world and has introduced new freedoms, new ways to create and new challenges. The biggest of these challenges is how to balance creativity in this overwhelming age of revolutionizing technology.

So I’m going to paint a picture of how things were and how things are now. Knowing how engineers, producers and artists worked before and how it has changed will help us propel the independent music movement in the direction we would like to see it. E.U.

This issue’s topic request of discussion:
What is the definition of a Producer?

There are two different meanings for a Producer.

‘Producers’ in the days before computers, midi and software instruments/samplers were multi-talented musicians in the styles of Funk (James Brown), R&B (Marvin Gaye and the like), Rock (Beatles, Pink Floyd, etc). Their talents may range to one or all instruments: Guitar, bass, drums, sing, write lyrics and also engineer. The producers job was to help the artist create their vision and turn it into a new entity; Bring it to the next level. A producer would assist the entire band from every instrumentalist to the vocalist, etc. In short, a Producer can be a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, engineer (or beat maker these days) who helps shape an artist on a song or album and push the material in a new direction, new sounds, or to help finish a project, etc.

The current term for producer has also come to mean beat maker. Beat makers come in all shapes and sizes of talent and experience. Seasoned beat makers can be Producers as in the term above. A beat maker these days sometimes is the intro into being a Producer mostly depending on experience with the craft and their specific music style.

As an artist, beat maker, or producer looking for collaboration, production, assistance on an upcoming song or album, knowing these differences can help in choosing the right production team to complete a project.
