How many times have you stopped music production due to crazy circumstances in life.. How many times have you put your desires on hold because of fear and uncertainty? How many times have you done these things and then realized everything works out in the end?
If it was our choice, we would write songs and make music every second, every minute, and every waking moment of every day. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. The majority of time it seems like day-to-day activities come first and whatever time leftover at the end of the day is spent on music…
This week, no matter how busy your schedule is, stay open. During the times of other activities, keep your mind on your songwriting and your music. Always keep a pen and pad of paper with you to jot down any ‘idea flashes’ that flash on your ‘brain screen’ before they can escape. If you have access to a portable recorder or smartphone, keep that with you for sudden melody ideas too. Start a song idea list and maintain it daily..

All of us can’t help but notice how harsh the world has become. In a society that’s filled with nay-sayers, haters and critics everyone has an opinion. Even if it’s your girl friend’s opinion, or your mother’s, or even your best friend we all need to be on guard with who we’re letting into our musical sphere of influence. If you are someone who is ‘addicted to approval’ or crave the acceptance of that one special person, let me give you a word of warning. Computer Music Production School
In my late teens and early twenties whenever I worked on a new song or recording I would feel compelled to let someone listen to see if they ‘got’ my vision. If they didn’t, I was depressed and agitated or even discouraged. If they ‘got’ it, I felt elated and encouraged. But alas, along the jagged road of self observation I was forced to change this awful habit. One day I realized that this longing for acceptance wasn’t helping my creativity but poisoning it. I decided to start trusting myself, my instincts and my vision despite what others around me thought. As I got older and more secure with myself and my talents I was able to let go of what everyone thought. I mean, did everyone ‘get’ Mozart or Van Gogh when they were in the height of their careers? No! Many successful people have to go year after year hearing rejection before they make the big time. But these are the types of life experiences that make us strong in will and spirit.
I was coming to this conclusion when I started reading the Artists Way. In her book, Julia Cameron has a chapter on ‘The Shadow Artist’. A shadow artist is someone who has their own creativity blocked and has a perverted way of expressing it by hanging in the shadow of other artists as a friend or potential “helpers” (a.k.a. leeches). They may have good intentions on the surface but...
Often times I get a call from someone who says. “Uh, is this GotchaNoddin? …Oh, I’m so and so and I’m in the music business. I was hoping we could help each other out…you know, I make hits!“
“Ok,” I say…and start to ask my routine questions. What do you do? What have you done? How long have you been doing this? Sometimes people will actually cut me off with accolades of famous people they know and on and on they go with, “Oh, I made a hit with this person or that person and I got some industry connections!”
These people I have to call out. I go on to tell them, that no, you aren’t who you know but what makes you successful is the results in your life, how you go about achieving results and how many people you’ve helped. What I see lacking in the industry is heart and hard core common sense. I don’t know where it started, but for years there has been this ‘not enough’ mentality that there isn’t enough business to go around and that only a ‘select few’ can live their dreams in the music business. On the other spectrum, I get many folks calling me up with stars in their eyes thinking that success and fame can happen in a couple days. The reality is that I have to get through many hard layers of ego and self promotion until I can get to the center of a person’s character.
Now this is the exact same thing you have to do as you embark on the journey of your music dream. Don’t believe what people tell you. In the music business everyone talks. The only way to determine who to let in your circle is by actually witnessing the results in their life to back up what they’re telling you...

How to double track vocals is a common question. Some recording engineers know the power of doubling vocals and others barely play with it. What are double tracked vocals? Double tracked vocals are recording the vocal twice or ‘stacking’ vocals in order to thicken the vocal sound in the recording. Vocal doubling has been traced back to the Beatles when they were on four tracks and recording in mono!
When is vocal doubling called for? In my opinion, vocal doubling can be used all the time unless you have a strong vocalist. If you’re working with Cristina Aguilera or Mariah Carey they are both very dynamic singers. Doubling vocals on a simple hook melody or to emphasize a word is recommended but vocal doubling on a verse vocal would take away the uniqueness of their vocal range.
Double tracked vocals are recommended most in hip hop, reggaeton, dance and pop music. The goal is to get the vocalist to execute two really good vocal takes. It’s important to get the first one perfect. If the second vocal take falls short, this is where a great audio engineer can edit the first vocal take to align with the second take. (2009-02-20) - Getting Great Bass Sound
This article will help you achieve great bass sound in any situation on any system. The factors that make up great bass is your monitoring system, the mixing room, the bass patch, effects, compression and EQ.
Monitoring: Make sure your speakers are flat – meaning there are no eq curves, additional frequencies added so that what you hear is what you get. This makes sure your translation from system to system is accurate.
The Mixing Room: Because of technology, the room doesn’t matter anymore. If you are using nearfield or loud speakers, listen to mixes at conversation level. This will keep your ears fresh for longer periods of time and will yield accurate results faster.
Bass Sounds: Using presets or building your own bass patches doesn’t matter. The important result is that the bass preset goes ‘WOW’ when you hear it. Either the bass willbe a sub bass sound or a punchy sound. How do you tell? Frequency range. Sub bass sounds are in the 30hz to 100hz. Punchy bass can be between 80hz to 120hz. Once you choose which type of bass sound, you can get into the sound design of the patch. Depending on what hardware or software unit you’re using, start with the Attack, Decay, Sustain, Release settings to adjust the tone and depth.
Now add the bass in with your beat then further design it in the pocket of the beat. After you have the general setting, now play with the other knobs of modulation, effects, oscillators, filters, etc. – just play your way into a great sound.
Bass Effects: Distortion, chorus, flange, phasers are great effects for bass that help enhance the initial bass patch. Use these sparingly for the final touch of your patch.
Bass Compression: Use compression to make the bass stay strong. Start with a ratio of 10:1, fast attack and slow release. Once again, play your way into a great sound. When doing this you’ll start noticing the settings that work best for your favorite patches.
Bass Eq: After compression, the last thing is EQ. A rule of thumb is never add or boost EQ. Ever. If the sound needs to be boosted, it’s better to choose or design a different patch that fits in the pocket of the beat. EQ is used only to cut the frequencies below 40hz. This gives the beat more headroom and dynamic capabilities. Use a low shelf EQ or hi pass filter.
There are tons of ways to approach the bass in a mix. Keep an eye on the clock during this process. Time management is essential to making great beats. Indecision is still making a decision. Use this approach to enjoy the process of getting great bass on to your way of finishing your beats. -Edward Unger

COMPRESSING A KICK DRUM AND
STARTER COMPRESSION SETTINGS
The main reason for compressing drums and a kick in particular is to make the ‘meat’ of the drums louder and to reduce the transients/peaks at the same time so that the kick can be punchier. This article is going to focus on compressing the Kick Drum and starter compression settings for other applications.
Your typical compression parameters are Threshold which determines when the compressor starts to work. Attack is how fast or slow the compressor reacts once it starts working. Release is how long the compression is held. Ratio is how much compression is applied to the signal. Gain Reduction shows you how much of the signal is getting processed. Using a DAW, you will want to use compression with a plugin on the insert of the track.
When compressing the kick, you are listening to the fatness or the punchiness of it.

Not only can we not sleep but we cannot sleep on other people as well. Always keep your eyes open to those around you especially the ones closest in your circle. Never sleep on them. If they start to slip, help them back up. If they loose focus, get their attention. Also make sure that they do the same for you. The people closest to you will either help you the most or hurt you the most but it is up to us to keep them in check and to let them know when they hurt and when their support is appreciated.

How many times have you been stuck, discouraged and frustrated thinking you may never write another good song or beat? Well I have some good news for you. There is no such thing as ‘writers block’.
If you are a writer, the way to get out of the notion you have writers block is by writing each day. The first thing in the morning, write for 10 minutes, 3 journal pages or 1 Word document/text file. The goal is to get past all of the clutter in your mind until you get to the ‘meat’ of what you’re really thinking and feeling.
Another option is to brainstorm on the things that have been moving you. Whether its personal circumstances, things in the world or what your friends are going through. Use the things around you to create a theme, let that be your song title and then you’ll find yourself with no more writers block.
Another option is to build a song thesis. For example, In the back of my mind I have been ‘working’ on a new album. This is a work in progress while in the middle of other projects. This thesis is both music and lyrical. I’m making decisions and jotting notes down while in the middle of ‘life’ about lyrical themes, song ideas and what I would like to express musically.

When writing, it always tends to be about us, the self, what we are experiencing and how our feelings relate to our experiences… It's very easy to get stuck inside the self and not see the people outside of our own bubble - to not see that others around us are going through similar trials and hardships…
This week, look at all the people around you, look at your immediate surroundings, look at everything else but yourself… Feel what others feel, breathe what others breathe, live what others are living, and capture it all on paper.
If having trouble, just free write - Write down your thought stream and edit it later. But most importantly, make sure every word written has raw, compassionate emotion behind it…
Stepping out of oneself will help teach more about oneself and is also another way to be inspired into writing songs and ideas one wouldn't normally write...

(2008-06-20) - How to Better EQ your Mix
HOW TO BETTER EQ YOUR MIX
When thinking of Equalization, many students are unsure of where to start. I am often asked “how do I EQ this instrument?” or “what are the rules of Equalization for drums and bass?” If you are using an MPC, Triton, Motif, or any other hardware gear, these guidelines can apply but are best left to the final mix stage in your Software Sequencer (Cubase, Sonar, Logic, ProTools, etc).
The most important aspect of EQ & mixing is the low shelving or hi pass filter function. These functions are used for cutting frequencies and are included as standard features in the majority of Equalizers. When an element in the mix is left untouched, it may contain unheard frequencies that can interfere with the punch, clarity, loudness and energy of the mix.
The solution is cutting. The goal is to remove unneeded frequencies to create additional space for the elements in the mix. For example, the frequencies below 100Hz on a snare drum may interfere with a sub bass or kick drum. Read More

When constantly living on the go and the rush, it is difficult to really sit down and 'search out' what's in mind and in heart. By always staying busy and never allowing time to think, we stand still, we form fears of looking inward, and we form procrastination from fear of failure... this 'staying busy' creates the illusion of writer's block and darkens the soul from hope which then bleeds very heavily into songwriting.
